چکیده
Cell-free systems that catalyze the condensation of acetylcoenzyme A to form long chain fatty acids have been prepared from chicken liver by Wakil et al. (l), from yeast by Lynen (2), and from rat liver and brain by Brady, Bradley, and Trams (3, 4). In 1957, Stumpf and Barber (5) described a mitochondrial system isolated from avocado mesocarp that incorporated (Y-acetate into long chain fatty acids, mostly as triglycerides. In 1958, Squires et al. (6) prepared a water-soluble system from these particles that readily formed long chain fatty acids, provided COZ was added, and in 1959, Stumpf et al. (7) demonstrated sensitivity of this system to avidin. This paper will describe the preparation and properties of a water-soluble enzyme system from mitochondrial particles of the avocado mesocarp. This system catalyzes the incorporation of acetylcoenzyme A and malonylcoenzyme A to long chain fatty acids.

Fat metabolism in higher plants. XIV. Factors affecting the synthesis of oleic acid by particulate preparations from avocado mesocarp.
Numerous investigations have led to the point at which refined enzyme systems may be used to study the biosynthesis of saturated fatty acids (2, 3). The biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids has not been so thoroughly elucidated. Formation of unsaturated fatty acids has been observed experimentally in viva (4-9) and in vitro (10, 11) but several of these studies showed that incorporated radio...
متن کاملThe synthesis of fatty acids in avocado mesocarp and cauliflower bud tissue.
1. Plastid and mitochondrial preparations were obtained by density-gradient centrifugation of homogenates made by gentle disintergration of avocado fruit mesocarp and cauliflower bud tissue. 2. The mitochondrial preparations had respiratory activity but did not incorporate [1-14C]acetate into fatty acids. 3. The plastid preparations incorporated [1--14C]acetate into the range of fatty acids fou...
متن کاملII. Palmitic and stearic synthesis by an avocado supernatant system
The synthesis of palmitic and stearic acids by soluble proteins from avocado mesocarp has been examined. Evidence suggests that palmitate is made de novo and stearate by elongation of a C16 precursor. While the synthesis of palmitate from malonyl CoA is arsenite insensitive, the elongation reaction from palmitate to stearate is arsenite sensitive. The pattern of synthesis of the two acids is ne...
متن کاملMetabolic Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chickens: A Review
Chicken has been used as a suitable model for lipid metabolism studies, because dietary modifications especially dietary fat type can change chicken body composition. Fats act as a condense source of energy and certain fatty acids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are required for both animal and human health. The n-3 PUFAs, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic ...
متن کاملTextural, biochemical and micro-structural changes in mesocarp tissue of imported avocado from Peru during ripening
Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) fruit is a valuable product and notorious for the difficulties encountered in determining quality. Typically the degree of ripeness of many climacteric fruits, such as avocado, is measured by assessing flesh firmness. The aim of the presented work was to elucidate the temporal and spatial changes in texture, biochemistry and micro-structure in different avocado ...
